Behind the Scenes at The Franklin Institute: Managing the Hamilton Collections Gallery

At Becker & Frondorf, we are passionate about projects that inspire innovation, bring museum experiences to life, and transform spaces into something extraordinary. We were honored to serve as project managers for The Hamilton Collections Gallery at The Franklin Institute. This remarkable new gallery offers unprecedented access to hundreds of artifacts from The Franklin Institute’s storied collections, highlighting the rich history of scientific discovery and technological advancement. The two-story space, designed by the award-winning architectural firm SmithGroup, brings the museum’s vast archives to life with interactive elements, providing visitors with a one-of-a-kind experience that spans two centuries of groundbreaking science and technology.

A Historic Treasure Meets Modern Challenges

At the heart of the gallery is the Baldwin 60000 Locomotive, a cornerstone of the museum’s collections since 1933. We worked closely with the museum and construction team, Daniel J. Keating Company, to ensure this 350-ton marvel of engineering remained protected and supported during construction. The locomotive is now proudly displayed in a newly renovated gallery, with a cutaway floor to reveal the original steel and concrete bridge structures, showcasing the remarkable 19th-century engineering that has supported it for decades. This exhibition allows visitors to witness the Baldwin’s true scale and historical significance, offering an experience never before seen at the museum.

In addition to preserving the Baldwin Locomotive, we helped manage the construction of a two-story storage system that now displays thousands of previously unseen artifacts. The gallery also offers an inside look into the museum’s collections center, providing a rare glimpse into how these priceless objects are preserved and maintained for future generations. This newly renovated facility not only enhances the visitor experience but also supports the museum’s research and digitization efforts, helping make these historical objects accessible to a global audience.

Keeping the Vision on Track

The project wasn’t just about the Baldwin locomotive. The Hamilton Collections Gallery reflects The Franklin Institute’s vision to create a dynamic space showcasing its diverse collections. As project managers, we ensured that every aspect of the project—from initial design to final touches—aligned with this vision. This meant managing:

  • Timelines: Coordinating with architects, engineers, and contractors to meet the museum’s opening date without compromising quality.
  • Budgets: Monitoring costs and ensuring resources were allocated effectively, staying within the financial goals of the nonprofit institution.
  • Stakeholders: Balancing input from museum staff, donors, and other partners to maintain consensus and collaboration.

A Milestone in The Franklin Institute’s 200-Year Legacy

The Hamilton Collections Gallery is a testament to the museum’s commitment to innovation. With generous support from the Hamilton Family Charitable Trust and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the gallery marks a new era in the museum’s 200-year history, offering visitors an unprecedented view into the world of science and technology. The gallery’s inaugural exhibit, 200 Stories for 200 Years, celebrates The Franklin Institute’s 200th anniversary, showcasing a curated selection of artifacts, such as Benjamin Franklin’s Glass Armonica and Lightning Rod, Thomas Edison’s Light Bulb, and wing models from the Wright Brothers Aeronautic Collection.

This project is a meaningful moment in our ongoing relationship with The Franklin Institute, which has spanned more than 25 years. Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to contribute to several of the museum’s significant projects, and being part of the Hamilton Collections Gallery is especially rewarding. It is a privilege to support the museum in its mission to share its rich history and foster innovation. We look forward to continuing our work together, helping to bring new experiences to the public while supporting the museum’s enduring legacy of learning and discovery.
